Places To Eat

Salcombe itself has some truly fabulous restaurants catering for fine dining to pizzas, gastro pubs to crepes at the bakery – details of all of these can be found quite easily.  What we’ve listed below are some of the eating places that we’ve found and enjoyed outside of Salcombe, or off the beaten track.  Enjoyed because of the quality of the food, ease of dining with families, locations or sheer quirkiness.

The Winking Prawn – North Sands, Salcombe

On the beach, great for barbeques in the summer, a la carte dining, eating with kids (entertained by a huge dressing up box) – http://winkingprawn.co.uk/

The Ship Inn – Noss Mayo

A waterside pub on the Yealm estuary, choose al fresco in the summer (maybe watching the annual regatta), cosy up in front of the log fires in the winter, or tie your boat up outside! http://www.nossmayo.com/index.html

Millbrook Inn, Southpool Creek

Award winning pub on Southpool creek.  Try going by boat at high tide in the summer and having one of their fantastic barbeques.  An absolute must for duck racing at Easter! http://www.millbrookinnsouthpool.co.uk/

The Waterman’s Arms, Ashprington

Get the tides right and you can kayak/canoe right up to the front door!  You’ll be stranded in the pub (or outside dining area) on a spring high tide.  http://www.thewatermansarms.net/

Sharpham Vineyard

Even if you’re not going to visit where the vines are grown for the local wine you can still eat at Sharpham Vineyard.  Great food overlooking the River Dart in tranquil surroundings.  http://www.sharpham.com/vineyard_cafe.htm

The Sea Trout Inn, Staverton

Great pub.  Be prepared for a hairy journey, the lanes are tight and there are narrow bridges to cross – all part of the fun!  http://www.theseatroutinn.co.uk/

The Pilchard Inn, Burgh Island

You can walk over from Bigbury at low tide but even more fun is getting the sea tractor at high tide.  Set on a tiny island with just an art deco hotel (favoured by Agatha Christie) for a neighbour, it’s a lot of fun.  http://www.burghisland.com/pilchard.html

The Old Inn, Malborough

Directly opposite Hope Thatch.  Got an early start?  Try their early breakfast club for a great start to the day and an early getaway.  http://www.theoldinndevon.co.uk/

The Cricket Inn, Beesands

Great for local crab, lobster and scallops caught from right in front of the restaurant.  Refurbished to a high standard, lying directly behind the beach.  http://www.thecricketinn.com/

The Hope & Anchor, Hope Cove

The hub of the popular and unique old fishing village.  http://www.hopeandanchor.co.uk/

The Beach House, South Milton Sands

A new discovery for us!  A laidback foodie destination, great if you love beach hut restaurants, great if you love seafood! http://www.beachhousedevon.com/
